The end of high school is nearing, and most students have so many questions about the future- “What do I want my degree to be?”, “How do I score that scholarship?”, “How can I guarantee my career success?” and more. They don’t know how to answer these questions and end up thinking to themselves, “If only I had an experienced professional to guide and give me some advice.”
“There is no direct path to success- different pathways can lead you to the career you want" - Bloomberg Representative
At JA Australia, we know that high schoolers need to prepare for both the HSC and their career. We recognise their concerns and give students the opportunity to have all their post-HSC questions answered through our annual Speed Mentoring Program in partnership with Bloomberg! The program was held at the Bloomberg Sydney office on the 12th of May. Students were given a tour of Bloomberg’s office and had the unique opportunity to access one-on-one mentoring sessions with Bloomberg and JA professionals.
“The JA program was a great learning experience for developing your communication skills. Even for shy people, I highly recommend this program as the mentors, and other students were very encouraging for you to step out of your comfort zone. Not only were the other students and mentors very friendly, but this program also allowed you to gain insight into the corporate world and the skills needed within the industry.” - Anna Arreza
The two-hour program allowed students to build their interpersonal and networking skills, as they interact with corporate volunteers, gaining an insight into the volunteers’ various career paths and how they have gotten to where they are today. Students were also able to obtain early awareness of the challenges that they may face in the business world, and were advised on how to combat them! The chance to learn about Bloomberg as a business and the opportunities that are available to its employees was also incredibly valuable.
“Soft skills and experience far outweigh academics" - Bloomberg Representative
All the advice they gained was constructive in their preparation for scholarship, cadetship and other job applications that are beginning soon, with the program designed to guarantee their post-HSC success!
“Employers are interested in employees as people, not just workers” - Bloomberg Representative
Overall, the 2018 JA Speed Mentoring Program with Bloomberg enabled students to understand how to achieve their career goals and what employers look for in candidates. We hope that all the mentoring will lead this year’s participants to full-proof post-HSC success!
